The Contribution from the 5-Families #1

 Ng Ga Kuen (五家拳), also known as Five Family Fist, is a traditional Chinese martial art that incorporates techniques and principles from five different styles of kung fu. 


  • Fut Ga (佛) 三德 : The open hand techniques such as palming, slicing, and slapping is from Southern Shaolin. The NGK Fut Ga style has the techniques that were descended from the Shaolin Kung Fu lineage.
  • Hung Ga (洪) 洪熙官: Hung’s closed hand punching was chosen for its power and directness.
  • Choy Ga (蔡) 蔡伯達: Choy’s medium range stance was used to facilitate quicker transition to advance or retreat.
  • Lee Ga (李) 李友山: Lee’s blocking and joint-locking was utilized as NGK’s defense techniques.
  • Mok Ga (莫) 莫清嬌: Mok’s stealth kicking completed the NGK system.

Forms and combat concepts were created to ensure longevity and perseverance of the system, which identifies its lineage. These five ancestors from Southern Shaolin provided internal, external, mental cultivation, kung fu etiquette or martial virtues, and philosophical methods as was taught in Shaolin. 

 By combining these styles, Ng Ga Kuen creates a well-rounded martial art that balances power, speed, flexibility, and strategy.

*Key Characteristics of Ng Ga Kuen*

1. *Versatility*: Ng Ga Kuen is known for its adaptability, incorporating both hard and soft techniques. It includes strikes, kicks, joint locks, throws, and grappling, making it effective in various combat scenarios.

2. *Strong Stances*: Like many southern Chinese martial arts, Ng Ga Kuen emphasizes low, stable stances (e.g., horse stance) to generate power and maintain balance.

3. *Hand Techniques*: The style features a wide array of hand techniques, including punches, palm strikes, finger jabs, and clawing movements. These are often delivered with precision and power.

4. *Footwork*: Footwork in Ng Ga Kuen is designed to be efficient and adaptable, allowing practitioners to move quickly while maintaining stability.

5. *Circular and Linear Movements*: The style combines circular movements (for deflecting and redirecting force) with linear attacks (for direct, powerful strikes).

6. *Internal and External Balance*: Ng Ga Kuen incorporates both external (physical) and internal (breathing, energy, and mental focus) training, promoting overall health and martial skill.

 *Training in Ng Ga Kuen*Training in Ng Ga Kuen is comprehensive and includes the following components:  

1. *Forms (Katas)*: Practitioners learn traditional forms that encapsulate the techniques and principles of the five families. These forms are essential for developing muscle memory, coordination, and understanding the applications of techniques.  

2. *Conditioning*: Physical conditioning is a key part of training, focusing on building strength, flexibility, and endurance. This may include stance training, striking heavy bags, and practicing on wooden dummies.  

3. *Sparring*: Sparring allows practitioners to apply techniques in a controlled, realistic setting. It helps develop timing, distance management, and adaptability.  

4. *Weapons Training*: Ng Ga Kuen includes training with traditional Chinese weapons, such as the staff, spear, broadsword, and butterfly swords. Weapons training enhances coordination and understanding of body mechanics.  

5. *Internal Training*: Practitioners may also engage in qigong (energy work) and meditation to cultivate internal strength, focus, and relaxation.
